The Kansas City Chiefs go on the road for the first time this season. A trip to a warm Miami climate will pit two teams against each other that easily appear to be on opposite ends of the spectrum. It would not be crazy to say the Dolphins are the worst team in the NFL.
This Sunday will be the 34th all-time meeting between the Chiefs and the Dolphins, including the playoffs. How has the series historically gone for Kansas City when facing Miami? Let's dive into key parts of the results.
Series is essentially spilt entering this week
The Chiefs hold a slight advantage over the Dolphins in the all-time meetings. Kansas City is 17-16 in their series against Miami. That includes four total playoff meetings between the two. These two AFC foes met quite a bit at the end of the 1960s to kick the series off. In total, Kansas City met Miami six times from 1966 to 1969.
Similar to when we looked at the history of the Chiefs-Broncos all-time meetings, some notable win streaks have been strung together between K.C. and Miami. The Chiefs won all of those first six matchups in the '60s. The Dolphins' first-ever win against the Chiefs came in the 1971 AFC Divisional Round of the playoffs. It took until double overtime for Miami to emerge victorious on Christmas Day 1971.
Win streaks for Miami in the series include a four-game win streak over Kansas City in the 1980s. The Dolphins also topped the Chiefs five times in a row in the 1990s.
Chiefs own Dolphins in recent history
Beyond that six-game win streak for Kansas City in the 1960s, the Chiefs currently enjoy a dominant win streak over the Dolphins. Miami enters this Sunday having dropped five in a row to K.C. The Dolphins have not beaten the Chiefs since November 6, 2011.
Many fans may not remember that matchup, given it was nearly 15 years ago. The Chiefs were actually coming off a wild Monday night win over the Chargers on Halloween. A Philip Rivers fumble when the Bolts were set up for a game-winning kick in field goal range made him utter the words "worst day ever." Kansas City eventually won that division matchup in overtime.
After that emotional high, the Chiefs laid an egg against the Dolphins. Miami entered that 2011 matchup at 0-7 and steamrolled Kansas City by a score of 31-3. Eventual Chiefs fill-in legend Matt Moore tossed three touchdowns and had only six incompletions against Kansas City's defense.
Since then, all of the Chiefs-Dolphins matchups have involved Andy Reid. Those five straight wins include memorable moments in the two most recent meetings. The Chiefs eliminated the Dolphins in frigid Kansas City in the Wild Card Round the last time these two met. And in the series matchup before that, K.C. defeated Miami on international soil in Frankfurt, Germany.
That means this Sunday marks the first time the Chiefs and Dolphins have squared off in the regular season in the United States since 2020. Kansas City looks for its 18th all-time win over Miami as the Dolphins hope to make any progress at the beginning of this season.
