Some moves speak for themselves, and it's clear the Kansas CIty Chiefs believe that the injury to Jack Cochrane's knee is severe enough that it warrants a response.
The Chiefs reached an agreement to bring back linebacker Cam Jones onto the 90-man roster on Wednesday, per reporter Aaron Wilson. The move further bolsters the LB corps while providing a very familiar face for special teams coordinator Dave Toub's units. That feels prescient, knowing that Cochrane has missed the last couple of days of practice.
To make room for Jones, the Chiefs placed defensive lineman Anthony Dunn on waivers. Dunn signed with the team back in May as an undrafted prospect out of Toledo.
The Chiefs are on the verge of training camp's end, saying goodbye to another year of intense summer prep at Missouri Western State. Cochrane left practice on a cart after injuring his right knee, and he's been out ever since. As the Chiefs prepare to visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for their second preseason game (and a third and final preseason game just five days later), the Chiefs aren't waiting for Cochrane to heal. Jones' arrival gives them important depth for the days ahead, at the very least.
Jack Cochrane's injury seems to have warranted a response from the front office.
Jones began his career with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent linebacker out of Indiana in 2023. Jones went on to play in all 17 games and turned into a core-four performer on special teams units for the next two seasons. He was never to climb the depth chart beyond that, with only 81 and 80 snaps on defense in consecutive seasons, but there's definitely value in having reliable players in coverage units.
After the Chiefs waived Jones going into the '25 season, he was claimed by the New York Jets. He spent much of the season on injured reserve, with only 10 games played before his deal expired and he hit free agency this spring. The New York Giants signed him to a one-year deal but waived him on the eve of training camp, and he's been available ever since.
Beyond Cochrane's injury, the Chiefs' linebackers were already adjusting to the free-agent loss of Leo Chenal to the Washington Commanders. Drue Tranquill's back spasms have flared up during the team's stay in St. Joseph as well, which further depleted the unit in practice.
