The Kansas City Chiefs used this offseason to revamp the roster after missing the playoffs for the first time in the Patrick Mahomes era. The biggest focus area came on the defensive side of the ball.
The Chiefs made sure to add juice on defense, and the latest report signals that rookie cornerback Jadon Canady is being given the chance by Kansas City to start from Day 1. ESPN's Nate Taylor appeared on 96.5 The Fan and said, "We have a true competition at nickel."
With the battle being between Canady, Kader Kohou, and Chris Roland-Wallace, there's a real shot that the rookie comes out on top in this comp.
Chiefs have open competition at slot CB
The Chiefs brought Kohou in on a one-year deal after he missed last season with a torn ACL. Before the injury, he was a member of the Miami Dolphins, where he played both inside and out. The bulk of his snaps came in the slot, so his experience could work in his favor, but Kansas City isn't handing him the job.
That works out for Canady and shows the staff believes he has a chance to be the best option at the position. Last season with the Oregon Ducks, things seemed to click for him. He may be undersized, which could give him some troubles at times, but his athleticism and instincts stand out.
His eyes are usually in the correct place, which allows him to be in the right spot against the receiver. He trusts his reads, and that gives him the ability to play free. It's also impressive that Canady can mirror and be sticky in short area routes. In 2025, he didn't give up a completion of more than 11 yards.
While the NFL is a different beast, there's a pathway for him to carve out a role for himself. Roland-Wallace is entering his third season with the team, but over the first two seasons, he's been more of a depth piece. He's never played in more than 30 percent of the defensive snaps and has been used more as a special teamer.
Things can change over the next few weeks, but the Chiefs likely will decide between Canady and Kohou as their starting slot corner. Considering that Kohou is coming off a major injury, there's no telling how he'll bounce back.
Nonetheless, OTAs, minicamp, and training camp will be massive for the rookie. With a strong summer, he could end up being a starter in Week 1 for this team when the 2026 season begins.
