The Kansas City Chiefs made a big move on Wednesday, adding two years to Patrick Mahomes' contract, which is now worth a whopping $504.75 million (and possibly up to $522.25 million through incentives and escalators), thus making his deal the first ever in the NFL with a value exceeding half a billion dollars, and will keep him with the club through the 2033 season.

On Thursday, the Denver Broncos made some contract news of their own, as it was announced that head coach Sean Payton has been given a new five-year deal that will keep him in the Mile High City through the 2030 campaign. Payton had two years remaining on the five-year deal he signed when he joined the Broncos ahead of the 2023 season, but this new deal replaces that one.

As is the case with most head coaches, financial terms were not disclosed, but one could easily assume that the one-time Super Bowl winner will be collecting at least $20 million per season over the next five years, which is reportedly what Andy Reid is raking in. But that's mere speculation.

No matter the money, the Chiefs certainly can't be pleased with this news, as Payton has turned the Broncos into a genuine contender over the last few years and has kinda taken it to Kansas City along the way.

Sean Payton has won four of six against the Chiefs since joining the Broncos

During his 16-year run with the New Orleans Saints from 2006 to 2021, Payton only saw the Chiefs on three occasions, going 1-2 in those games with a victory in 2008 and losses in 2016 and 2020. There was a fourth game in that stretch, but that was in 2012, which was the season Payton was suspended for his role in the notorious "Bountygate" scandal. For those wondering, Kansas City did get a 27-24 overtime victory in that one.

Now, prior to Payton's arrival, the Chiefs had won 15 straight games over the Broncos dating back to Denver's Super Bowl-winning 2015 campaign. And that streak was extended to 16 when the longtime rivals met for the first time in 2023, with Andy Reid & Co. taking a 19-8 victory in Week 6.

Since then, though, Payton and the Broncos have taken four of the last five with the Chiefs. After Denver salvaged the split in 2023, the two teams split again in 2024. But this past year, of course, the Broncos swept the Chiefs, first taking a 22-19 win in Week 11 and then a 20-13 victory on Christmas Day in Week 17.

Denver ultimately went 14-3 to win the AFC West, thus ending Kansas City's record streak of eight straight division titles, and then went on to defeat the Buffalo Bills in an instant classic in the Divisional Round before falling to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game.

The Chiefs and Broncos won't have to wait long to see another in 2026, as Reid and Payton are set for a Week 1 battle at Arrowhead on Monday Night Football.
