Tragedy struck the Kansas City Chiefs' training camp on Monday, as it was reported that offensive coordinator Eric Bienemy's wife was shot on Sunday evening at their family home in Ashburn, Virginia. One of their sons has been charged in connection with the shooting.
Bienemy left training camp in Kansas City to return home and be with his wife, and Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told reporters that the team will give Bienemy as much time as he needs to stay with his family and be away from the team during this time.
Reid also spoke with the media on Wednesday and provided a positive update about Bienemy's wife, stating that she is no longer in the intensive care unit and is "doing better and great from where she was." She is "making progress," according to Reid, which is a welcome development.

Kansas City's head coach continued by noting that Bienemy is still in Virginia with his wife as she recovers, and that he believes that is important.
Elijah Bienemy, Eric and Mia Bienemy's son, has been charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony (first offense) and discharge of a firearm inside of a dwelling, according to USA Today.
"Virginia criminal code defines malicious wounding as, "shoot, stab, cut, or wound any person or by any means cause him bodily injury, with the intent to maim, disfigure, disable, or kill." He could face up to 33 years in prison if found guilty on all three charges.
Elijah Bieniemy has been held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center. He has a motion hearing scheduled for July 30 and a preliminary hearing set for Aug. 31. Motion hearings do not always require the defendant to be present and it is unclear whether or not Bieniemy will appear in court on Thursday."
When asked about Bienemy's absence at training camp by a reporter, Reid had the following to say:
"Eric's a big part of this. [We] love having him here. But right now, it's important that he takes care of business. And everybody knows that. So, everybody's game is picked up, and they're all working hard. Eric will be back soon enough to jump in there and do his thing. But he's got to take care of that first"
