The Kansas City Chiefs have reached agreement on a contract with their fourth-round draft pick, Chamarri Conner.
The Kansas City Chiefs have officially signed their first of seven draft picks from the 2023 NFL Draft with word that fourth round selection Chamarri Conner, a defensive back from Virginia Tech, has agreed to a contract.
Since rookie deals are slotted for the National Football League, there was very little for any representatives involved to negotiation on either side. Conner’s deal was always going to come in at four years and $4,591,368. This season, he will make just under $940K for the Chiefs.
Conner was drafted at No. 119 overall in the fourth round when the Chiefs traded up in a deal with the Minnesota Vikings. In what was a bit of a steep cost, the Chiefs moved up 15 spots from 134 overall from the Vikings in exchange for an extra 5th round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
The move up the board was the third consecutive trade up in the top 120 picks for the Chiefs in the draft, who also moved up in the second and third rounds to get SMU wide receiver Rashee Rice and Oklahoma tackle Wanya Morris, respectively.
Given the parameters of the deal, the Chiefs clearly love what they see in Conner as a versatile and physical defensive back who will likely compete right away as a core-four special teams player. Eventually it’s possible Conner pushes for very real playing time in the three-safety sets that the Chiefs often lean on, pushing free agent signing Mike Edwards for minutes as the season goes on.
Conner is the 10th-ranked all-time tackler in Virginia Tech history.
