Peter King reported that the Raiders considered moving back up into the first round in a potential trade with the Chiefs in the 2023 NFL Draft.
There was a moment, at the very end of the opening round of the 2023 NFL Draft, that it felt like the Kansas City Chiefs should try to move back. And as each team was given 10 total minutes per pick, the waiting required for fans felt like maybe general manager Brett Veach really was working the phones.
As it turns out, he was doing so with the Las Vegas Raiders.
According to NFL reporter Peter King, the Raiders were eyeing a move back into the first round in the hopes of securing Michael Mayer, tight end from Notre Dame. King was situated in the Raiders draft room for that first round for the primary feature for his post-draft column, and he states that Josh McDaniels and general manager Brad Ziegler had signed off on the idea to trade up with the Chiefs if they would.
The problem was that the Chiefs were demanding too much. The Raiders were picking at No. 38, so the Chiefs would not have to slide too far, but they were still asking Las Vegas for a third round choice at No. 70 overall. In return, the Raiders would move up eight slots and gain the Chiefs sixth-round spot at No. 217.
In the end, the Raiders denied the Chiefs a chance to slide down after seeing so many top prospects go from 20 to 30, and Veach turned in a draft card that read “Felix Anudike-Uzomah.”
