Kansas City Chiefs land Keondre Coburn in sixth round of 2023 NFL Draft
By Matt Conner
The Kansas City Chiefs added the next member of their 2023 rookie class with the selection of Keondre Coburn.
Earlier in the draft, the Kansas City Chiefs gained a sixth-round pick from the Detroit Lions in their original move up I the second round to take wide receiver Rashee Rice. Now they’ve utilized that pick at No. 194 overall to select defensive tackle Keondre Coburn out of Texas.
The Chiefs get their first truly big body of the draft with the 330-plus pound Coburn, a run-stuffer out of the University of Texas. Coburn was named second-team All-Big 12 last season for the Longhorns and projects as a nice nose tackle at the pro level.
For the Chiefs, Coburn provides some real competition at a position at which Derrick Nnadi has been losing ground over the years yet no one else has really stepped up to claim the starting spot. Turk Wharton has some nice moves but he’s also versatile and has proven to be more than just a run-stuffer. The Chiefs signed Danny Shelton last year and then Brandon Williams late in the season, showing how often they were still looking for help from someone. Coburn isn’t a high ceiling player but it’s another (big) body to throw into the mix in training camp.
The Chiefs began the afternoon with two picks in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, including the first overall. However, the Dallas Cowboys came in with an offer of a future fifth-round pick in 2024, and the Chiefs gladly stepped aside for a gain in future draft assets.
