The Kansas City Chiefs are back again with another double-digit amount of selections to make in the 2023 NFL Draft, and this year, they have the added bonus of hosting the annual festivities. The NFL has completely remade much of the area in and around Union Station and the World War 1 Memorial and fans are already making their way there by the thousands.

This year’s event should be very exciting for several teams with as many as five franchise quarterbacks predicted to go in the first round, including as many as four in the top several selections. This class also has exciting prospects at running back, wide receiver, tight end, corner and edge rusher.

As for the Chiefs, they’re not on the clock until No. 31 overall, so we’ve got some time to kill here on opening night. Let’s take a look at some important facts about the draft, the picks the Chiefs can make, and how you can take in the festivities.

How many total picks are in the 2023 NFL Draft?

In this year’s draft, a total of 259 selections will be made over the course of seven rounds. That includes all compensatory picks and originally scheduled picks minus any that were taken away (e.g. the Miami Dolphins losing picks for tampering).

Why are the Chiefs picking at No. 31 overall?

As the team that won the Super Bowl, the Chiefs are forced to pick last in each round. However, in this year’s draft, the Dolphins were found guilty of tampering (see above) and forfeited their first-round selection in the process. That bumped up every lower team one spot which takes the Chiefs from the typical spot of No. 32 for the defending champs to No. 31.

What are undrafted free agents and when can they be signed?

Any prospect who was not officially selected during the course of the 2023 NFL Draft’s seven rounds is eligible to be signed by any NFL team immediately following the draft. These players are referred to as undrafted free agents (UDFA), but they can also be called priority free agents or rookie free agents. After the draft is played out in its entirety (typically Saturday late afternoon), the post-draft free agent frenzy features a mad scramble of teams trying to convince those players to sign. For many players, they were considered draftable by certain franchises but just never had the chance to hear their names called.

How many picks do the Chiefs have in the 2022 NFL Draft?

At the present time, the Chiefs have 10 picks going into the 2023 NFL Draft. They have two remaining picks left over from the Tyreek Hill trade from a year ago and compensatory picks that will provide further opportunities. Keep this page bookmarked for an updated list of both selections and unused picks.
