The Kansas City Chiefs have reportedly asked wide receiver prospect Zay Flowers to work out with Patrick Mahomes before the draft.
The Kansas City Chiefs are either ready to start building some offensive chemistry early or throw teams off the scent with their latest pre-draft visit request, but either way, it’s exciting to consider. On Wednesday, the final day that teams can have a prospect visit with the team before the 2023 NFL Draft, NFL reporter Adam Schefter of ESPN noted that Boston College wide receiver Zay Flowers was asked to work out by the Chiefs with Patrick Mahomes in Texas.
On the surface, it’s an interesting and perhaps an odd request. The Chiefs didn’t want to see Flowers at Arrowhead like a normal visit. Instead, Schefter notes that they asked him to go to Texas to work out with the team’s star quarterback. Mahomes is in Texas through the first two weeks of the team’s offseason program as the franchise decided to keep things virtual in the early going, in part, due to the long season that just ended in February.
With Mahomes and other pass catchers building chemistry near his home, it makes sense that Brett Veach, the team’s general manager, might want to hear some direct reports from the franchise quarterback about his potential new weapon. A first-round pick on a wide receiver is something the Chiefs haven’t done in quite some time, so any investment made at that position should be signed off on by Mahomes.
As for Flowers, he’s a smaller target at just under 5’10” and 182 lbs., but he runs great routes and has an explosive step with top-end speed and should be able to get open at the pro level with regularity. Last season he had 78 catches for 1,078 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns for Boston College.
