NFL mock draft 2.0: KC Chiefs trade way up for bold selection
By Grant Tuttle
The Washington Commanders are in need of some serious upgrades in the defensive backfield. While they have a couple of nice pieces, they don’t have a lockdown corner. Joey Porter Jr. has tremendous length and press skills. For a team like the Commanders that have built a powerful pass-rush, having someone that can be good in man coverage is paramount. If Porter Jr. is available at 16, they should sprint to the podium.
The Steelers take another cornerback. Cam Smith would be a slam-dunk addition to a Pittsburgh Steelers defense that already features talent at every level. With that in mind, they added Patrick Peterson this offseason and he is expected, as it stands for now, to be the number one option. While he had a good season with Minnesota last year, Peterson is no spring chicken. Adding Cam Smith would provide a long-term option and a solid number two. Smith’s length and physicality would make him a great addition to the Steelers defense.
The Lions complete a run on cornerbacks. The Lions were extremely successful on offense a season ago. It became apparent that they just could not make a stop when they needed to. With the earlier addition of Myles Murphy to the front seven, it only makes sense that they would add someone to the secondary. Kelee Ringo has been a name that many have had their eye on in the pre-draft process. With blazing speed and good length, he could develop into a star at the next level. He might need some extra work to get “NFL ready,” but in the long term, he might be very good.
Projected Trade with Tampa Bay
This would be an incredible move for Kansas City to make. While two tackles are off the board, Paris Johnson Jr. is arguably the most “NFL ready” tackle in the class. While Kansas City has said publicly that Jawaan Taylor is going to switch to left tackle, the addition of Paris Johnson Jr. would probably change that sentiment. On an offensive line that is extremely expensive, having 5 seasons of cost-controlled production would be invaluable. If the Chiefs invest in their bookends for the long term, they will have continued offensive success for the foreseeable future. Johnson has good length, power, and footwork. It would not be surprising if he was the best overall tackle in this class.
The Seahawks get their second pick of the draft. After addressing the interior of the defensive line, they now address the interior of the offensive line. John Michael Schmitz is the addition to solidify the center position in Seattle for the foreseeable future. While Shmitz is not a young rookie, he is technically sound and plays with a tenacity that anyone would want on their offensive line. He has room to grow, but he would be the day-one starter in Seattle.
