Chiefs Kingdom had a mixed response to the return of Justin Watson to the team on a two-year deal on Friday, and many fans want to see more at the position.

To say the return of wide receiver Justin Watson to the Kansas City Chiefs drew a mixed response from fans on social media is to emphasize the multiple ways that can be taken. For some, the idea of a mixed response means a sort of shrug, an ability to see some good and bad in the same scenario. That much is certainly true of some opinions shared on Twitter, but for others, there are clearly fans in Chiefs Kingdom that like it and others who loathe it.

Much of the disdain for Watson’s return likely has less to do with Watson and more to do with a desire to see greater moves made at the position. For a fan base that’s been waiting on the likes of an Odell Beckham Jr. signing or a DeAndre Hopkins trade, it can feel like a major letdown to see a move made only to have it be WR5 on the depth chart. That much is understandable.

That said, there’s no offseason race in which moves have to be made in order and there’s real value to what Watson brings—hence the reason why the Chiefs went two years on the deal. He has special teams experience, can step in as a returner, and averaged 21 yards/catch last year in a smaller offensive role that proved he can move the chains with an occasional big play. For the Chiefs, the new contract is about seeing how he might expand on that role with greater familiarity and chemistry.

As for the responses, most fans or analysts sounded pleasant enough and nothing more.

Others were a bit more puzzled even if they still held out hope for Watson and company to turn into something more.

Some responses were just flat-out ugly, but the hatred of Watson isn’t personal. Instead, some fans just hate the whole WR corps at this stage.

Which leads others of us to wonder, too…
