3 KC Chiefs players who could be nice surprises in ’23
By Matt Conner
Let’s look at a few Kansas City Chiefs players who could be nice surprises for Andy Reid’s team in 2023.
The goal is to have as few questions as possible on the roster. Between free agency and the NFL Draft and the ensuing minicamps and tryouts, the goal for the Kansas City Chiefs and every other team is to enter into the preseason calendar and conduct training camp with as much certainty and security at each position as possible.
Of course, it doesn’t always work that way. For a team like the Chiefs, with a quarterback that makes more than most in Patrick Mahomes, it can be more difficult to thread the needle in terms of cap space and player acquisitions than it is for, say, a team like the Philadelphia Eagles where Jalen Hurts is on a rookie deal.
The NFL likes the fact that its parity means it’s nearly impossible for a team to create a modern dynasty. They want basement-dwellers to become division winners. And it’s good for the league and the fan bases involved. Compare the NFL’s interest level across all 32 teams compared to Major League Baseball where most of the winners are obvious before games are ever played and some teams don’t even try to compete—we’re looking at you, Oakland.
For a team like the Chiefs, in which there’s limited cap space, it can be nice to have some developmental surprises along the way. It’s all about the eagle eye of a scouting department, the internal trust and communication of a healthy organization, the coaching acumen to develop that talent, and the player himself to put in the work.
While the Chiefs will be favored to repeat in 2023, they will have roster holes, like every team, heading into a new year. But these potential surprises could provide some unexpected help for which Andy Reid and company would be very thankful.
