The Kansas City Chiefs would be wise to hurry up and get an extension done with Chris Jones before the market significantly resets.
A year ago at this time, the Kansas City Chiefs were preparing to make Tyreek Hill a big-money extension that would have allowed him to stay with the team for the remainder of his career. Then, faster than anyone could have predicted, the market shifted. Suddenly, the Chiefs were undergoing a considerable youth movement on defense.
One year later and defensive tackle Chris Jones is the one with an extension in his sights. This time there’s a lesson to be learned for the Chiefs.
While it’s easy to say that the Chiefs looked fine even after trading Hill, the truth is that Jones is more important to the success on that side of the ball than Hill was to the team’s offense. That’s no offense to the Cheetah; rather the team just boasts an abundance of riches on the offensive side.
Right now is the prime time to get a deal done with Jones to extend his current contract and keep him in K.C. for the next few seasons. But things could get expensive really quickly. That’s because the list of defensive tackles who are ready for extensions of their own around the league is impressive.
The Tennessee Titans have reportedly already started talks with Jeffery Simmons for a new deal. Behind him, the Jets will be doing the same with Quinnen Williams and the Commanders with Da’Ron Payne. There’s also Derrick Brown and the Panthers, D.J. Reader and the Bengals, Dexter Lawrence and the Giants, Javon Kinlaw and the 49ers, and Ed Oliver and the Bills. While not all of these players are created equal, they do represent a nice young core of players who will elevate the market rate for a game-changer like Jones.
Just like Davante Adams and a plethora of moving parts at wide receiver last season.
