Derrick Nnadi

In some ways, Derrick Nnadi is the sort of player who should be back with the Chiefs. Nnadi is only 27 years old and is incredibly reliable along the defensive interior, having played in all 17 regular season games last year. If he’s amenable to returning, why wouldn’t the Chiefs bring him back?

That’s a great question, but it’s also important to note Nnadi’s declining overall value to the team in the last year. If money talks, then the single-season deal worth $2.75 million signed last spring calls Nnadi a marginal player. That’s further supported by the fact that Nnadi played a smaller percentage of defensive snaps than ever before in 2022—a career-low 34 percent which clearly shows he’s been passed by others on the depth chart.

Nnadi might be a nice enough player on some early downs, but the Chiefs have multiple players to consider re-signing inside and the late-blooming Khalen Saunders should be top priority at the position. From there, the Chiefs also have Chris Jones returning (and likely receiving an upgraded extension) to go with Turk Wharton, who will be back from injured reserve.

The Chiefs would be wise to invest in the position in the draft here. Maybe Nnadi is back with a re-signing but even then, his roster spot won’t be guaranteed going forward.
