A complete look at the history of the Kansas City Chiefs and the single biggest game on the NFL’s calendar.

When it comes to a storied history, the Kansas City Chiefs might come out a bit better and richer than what the average football fan might believe.

The Chiefs are, at present, the National Football League’s closest thing to a dynasty. The Chiefs have hosted five consecutive championship games, and Patrick Mahomes has led them to three Super Bowl appearances in that time. If they take care of the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday in Glendale, that will be two championships in four years and a half-decade of AFC domination.

Update: The Chiefs beat the Eagles, 38-35 and are now 3-1 in the Super Bowl in their franchise history.

But before now, it’d been quite some time since the Chiefs had experienced anything similar to the excitement of the last few years.

Fans of the team will undoubtedly remember the number “50” being tossed around so often during the championship run that culminated in Super Bowl LIV. That number was ever-present because it had been 50 seasons since the Chiefs’ previous Super Bowl victory back in Super Bowl IV.

However, before all of this, the Chiefs were the darlings of the short-lived AFL, with three league championships from that league in 1962, 1966, and 1969. In fact, coming into the merger with the NFL, the Chiefs had won the AFL and then came in and won their first Super Bowl in the new league, giving them back-to-back wins and putting a new league on notice.

In the official Super Bowl, the Chiefs have been three times with a 2-1 record overall. This will be their fourth appearance and first against the Eagles. In the first game, the Chiefs beat the Minnesota Vikings by a final score of 23-7. Their next appearance was Patrick Mahomes’ first Super Bowl, an astounding 31-20 comeback victory. The Chiefs’ final appearance, however, was in 2020 when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers dominated K.C. by a final score of 31-9.

The Eagles and Chiefs kick off on Sunday night at 5:30 p.m. C.T.
