Patrick Mahomes was honored as the NFL’s Most Valuable Player for the second time in his young career on Thursday evening.
The National Football League handed out the majority of its most meaningful hardware on Thursday night at an annual event called the NFL Honors. Each year the banquet is held during Super Bowl week every year as a primetime awards show intended to celebrate the league’s best performances and players.
This year, the league’s Most Valuable Player award was given to Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes in a race that no one was really questioning anymore. While several potential candidates came and went throughout the year—from Josh Allen early to Jalen Hurts at various times to Joe Burrow late—the truth is that Mahomes never let go of the wheel.
The MVP win is Mahomes’ second such award of his career. It’s sickening for other teams to know that Mahomes has only started five seasons and he’s been crowned as the single best player in the game for two of them (and came in close in other seasons).
Mahomes finished the year as the NFL’s leader in passing yards (5,250) and passing touchdowns (41) and averaged 308 passing yards per game. He also led the league in QBR rating with a 77.6 mark for the season. This follows an MVP season back in 2018 when he had over 50 touchdown passes and 5,000 passing yards.
Mahomes can win his second Super Bown MVP award with a strong showing against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.
