The status of Patrick Mahomes’ right ankle is playing a massive role in the betting world this week. You need look no further than the odds movement of the Cincinnati Bengals-Kansas City Chiefs game.
After opening as a 1-point favorite, the Chiefs now find themselves 1-point underdogs. At one point, they were 2.5-point underdogs. That for a team playing at home and quarterbacked by the presumptive 2022 NFL MVP who has won a Super Bowl before.
While the Bengals are 3-0 over the Chiefs recently and Joe Burrow is no slouch himself, that’s not normal and is a reflection of the uncertainty surrounding Mahomes after he suffered a high ankle sprain against the Jaguars in the previous round of the playoffs.
Well, today we got our first official injury update, and it’s good news for Chiefs bettors.
According to Chiefs coach Andy Reid and reiterated by the Chiefs quarterback himself, Mahomes is practicing today and will likely do everything. We even got to see him doing some stretching and running. He doesn’t look 100%, but that’s not a surprise.
At this point, it’s certain Mahomes will play this week. It’s also clear he’s not 100%. So, should you bet on him?
Yes.
In 2019, Mahomes suffered a high ankle sprain in Week 1 and proceeded to throw 4 TDs and 443 yards in a blowout win against the Raiders in Week 2. Last week, he led the Chiefs on two scoring drives after hurting his ankle. And that was with him unable to put much or any pressure on it.
In his playoff career at home, Mahomes is 8-2 (should be 9-1 if Dee Ford wasn’t offside) and has recorded 32 TDs (28 pass, 4 rush) and only 3 INTs.

Point is, Mahomes is a gamer.
Throw in Reid’s brilliance at building a game plan to accentuate his player’s strengths (and mask their weaknesses) and I have no fear betting on Mahomes.
