Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy says he’s “very excited” by the idea of Deion Sanders coaching his alma mater at Colorado.

Anyone with a positive college experience will likely always have some sort of fondness for the campus and an interest in what continues to take place there long after graduation. That’s undoubtedly true for Eric Bieniemy, who is connected in myriad ways with his alma mater, the University of Colorado.

Bieniemy is a true hero when it comes to Colorado football after he set several all-time records for the Buffaloes during his playing days in the late ’80s. Not only was he an All-American running back during his tenure, but he set career marks in rushing touchdowns (42), rushing yards, and yards from scrimmage. With Bieniemy leading the offense, the Buffaloes also took home a National Championship in 1990, and EB finished third in Heisman Trophy voting (behind BYU quarterback Ty Detmer and Notre Dame wideout Raghib “Rocket” Ismail).

Upon his return to begin his coaching career in 2001, Bieniemy climbed the ranks to become the first alumnus to serve as a coordinator in any capacity for Colorado football. After serving as offensive coordinator through the 2012 season, he joined the Kansas City Chiefs as part of head coach Andy Reid’s new staff. For five years, he was RB coach for Reid before taking over as offensive coordinator from 2018 to the present.

Back in 2020, before the Buffaloes hired Karl Dorrell to be their football head coach, Bieniemy’s name was mentioned in conjunction with the role but he removed himself from consideration before ever officially interviewing. Now just a few years later, Colorado underwent another search and found their new man in former NFL defensive back Deion Sanders.

Sanders recently accepted the role to climb the coaching ranks himself and brings a major spotlight to the Buffaloes program. As for Bieniemy’s input on the hiring, the Chiefs O.C. says he’s “very excited for him.”

Sanders will take over for Dorrell who was dismissed after going winless in 2022 and going 8-15 overall as head coach for Colorado.
