The Kansas City Chiefs have added wide receiver Dazz Newsome to the team’s practice squad on Monday.

No position has seen more activity in this calendar year for the Kansas City Chiefs than at wide receiver. On Monday, they continued to tinker with their depth with the addition of wideout Dazz Newsome to the team’s practice squad, according to NFL reporter Tom Pelissero.

Newsome entered the NFL with the Chicago Bears after being selected in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft out of the University of North Carolina.

The Bears gave Newsome a cup of coffee on the active roster last year with slight playing time on offense and as a returner in a total of three games. He caught 2 of 5 targets for 23 total yards and returned a total of 6 punts for 75 yards there on special teams. His versatility is likely what caught the Chiefs’ eye and it will be up to Dave Toub to see how he looks as a potential aid there to coverage units or as a potential return candidate.

Newsome was released by the Bears in late August before this year as the team had changed leadership regimes and the incoming general manager Ryan Poles had no attachment to Newsome as a draft investment. Since then, Newsome has earned tryouts with the Seattle Seahawks and Cincinnati Bengals but he remained a free agent until being signed by the Chiefs.

Newsome’s signing comes in the wake of the team’s trade for Kadarius Toney and a complete offseason turnover at the position that included trading away Tyreek Hill and signing Marquez Valdes-Scantling and JuJu Smith-Schuster in addition to drafting Skyy Moore out of Western Michigan.
