How did the rookies on the Kansas City Chiefs play in the 44-23 victory over the San Francisco 49ers?

The Kansas City Chiefs bounced back in Week 7 with a dominant second half en route to a 44-23 victory over the same 49ers team they beat in Super Bowl LIV.  Which rookies saw playing time against San Francisco and how did those players perform?

The Chiefs selected ten players in this 2022 NFL Draft, with nine of them making the final roster after training camp, and eight have seen playing time on offense or defense so far this season. Despite making the final roster, Darian Kinnard has only dressed for one game this season, in which he only saw six snaps on special teams, and Nazeeh Johnson is on the practice squad. Trent McDuffie is currently on injured reserve but should return after the bye week.

Here are the snap counts for every rookie in Week 7:

  • Jaylen Watson: 71 defensive snaps.
  • Joshua Williams: 71 total snaps (63 defensive and 8 special teams)
  • George Karlaftis: 56 total snaps (51 defensive and 5 special teams)
  • Bryan Cook: 40 total snaps (25 defensive and 15 special teams)
  • Leo Chenal: 37 total snaps (16 defensive and 21 special teams)
  • Isiah Pacheco: 32 total snaps (19 offensive and 13 special teams)
  • Skyy Moore: 15 total snaps (14 offensive and 1 special team)

Leo Chenal, Linebacker (Round 3, Pick 103)

Leo Chenal played 37 snaps in total against the 49ers (16 on defense) and recorded one tackle on a 10-yard Christian McCaffrey run early in the game. He played in coverage on five plays but was not targeted. He blitzed on one snap but did not record a pressure. Unfortunately, Chenal did have a missed tackle, which he also did each of the previous two weeks. Overall, Chenal did not see much action on defense and struggled for the most part when he did. He’s a rotational player for a reason but it won’t always be like that for the rookie out of Wisconsin.
