How will Patrick Mahomes bounce back after throwing 2 costly interceptions against the Buffalo Bills? History says he will be on top of his game.

How should we expect Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes to respond following the loss to the Buffalo Bills? Well, history is a good indicator of what is going to happen. Mahomes should lead this Chiefs offense to a more successful performance when they travel to play the San Francisco 49ers this Sunday.

The first offensive possession for Kansas City versus the Bills ended with an interception. On the last possession in the 4th quarter was another interception. Both turnovers could’ve been avoided. However, it wasn’t all bad. In between those bookend possessions Patrick Mahomes threw for 2 touchdowns and didn’t turn the ball over. He also passed for 338 yards — completing 25 of 40 pass attempts. Nonetheless, the 2nd interception was forced and essentially ended the game.

Typically when Patrick Mahomes has not played the best, his mistakes are corrected immediately. Look back to a few weeks ago when the Chiefs lost to the Indianapolis Colts. Partly at fault was the lackluster display of offense. Mahomes put on a show in the next game against a very good Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense. He threw 3 touchdowns and led the team to put 41 points on the scoreboard.

Another relatively recent example where he didn’t play his finest was in the AFC Championship game when the Chiefs were defeated by the Cincinnati Bengals. The next regular season game was the 2022 season opener where Mahomes faced an Arizona Cardinals defense. That day he tossed 5 touchdowns.

Every team in the NFL is talented. Not giving your complete focus to the opposition can haunt you. A good team will have good preparation. Mahomes was asked about a future potential meeting with the Bills in the postgame presser.

"“You can’t look ahead. And I think that’s the biggest thing to me. And I think I learned that last year in the AFC Championship game. Sometimes if you start looking ahead that’s when you get beat… So we want to make sure we focus on this next week. How can we get better? To go out there and execute and try to find a way to win against a great football team at their home.”"

Too many times in the past the Chiefs have looked past an opponent. It doesn’t always result in losing the game. When they happen, it forces the team to be concentrated on the task at hand. This is largely why Mahomes puts a great effort on display immediately after making mistakes that result in a misplaced outcome. Expect Patrick Mahomes to be on top of his game in San Francisco. He will be ready and give the best chance possible to come back to Kansas City with a victory.
