KC Chiefs restructure Travis Kelce’s contract for cap space

The Kansas City Chiefs have created a bit more cap space for themselves at midseason with the restructuring of Travis Kelce’s contract.
The Kansas City Chiefs came into this season with very little wiggle room when it comes to the salary cap and any moves that the front office might want to make moving forward. There are options to create that room in various ways, but on the surface, the team had low financial margins. As it turns out, they created a bit more space for themselves on Tuesday with the announced restructuring of Travis Kelce’s contract.
Per NFL reporter Field Yates, the Chiefs restructured Kelce’s deal by taking his base salary and converting it into a signing bonus. The move officially shifts money around enough to give the Chiefs $3.455 million in cap room.
Per the NFLPA website, the Chiefs came into the day with less than $500K in cap space available to them.
It’s unknown whether the Chiefs have a specific move in mind or not, but it should be noted that the team’s bye week is coming up after this Sunday, which gives the front office a lot of time to sort through potential roster needs and additions. Beyond that, the NFL’s trade deadline is on November 1 and some deals have already started to happen as contenders poach losing teams for any assets that might help put them over the top.
Kelce is enjoying another banner season for the Chiefs and is under contract through the 2025 season in Kansas City.
