The Main Issue

There is no way to sugarcoat it. The Chiefs were bad in two of the three phases on Sunday. Defensively, this is the best start since Steve Spagnuolo took over the reins as defensive coordinator for the Chiefs. The Chiefs, however, are struggling in two areas that no one really expected: Offensively and on Special Teams.

For what seems like decades, Dave Toub and Eric Bieniemy have been circulated by the media as top head coaching candidates. To have what seems like top-level leadership and to look so incredibly out-coached is jarring. These coaches are not going to be replaced, at least not during the season. However, if the play calling continues to be an issue, there are other coaches that could take over that role. Andy Reid has been one that will occasionally overthink plays and have bad clock management when running an offense, however, he has had sustained success throughout his career when calling the plays. Matt Nagy has also had moderate success in that category.

The offensive woes seem to be a communication issue more than a talent issue. With young stars along the offensive line, there has been a problem protecting Mahomes. With talented receivers, they have struggled to find openings in coverage. With the best quarterback in the NFL, there has been a surprising lack of execution.

All of this reeks of miscommunication and not being on the same page.

It hasn’t been good. The special teams had what will undoubtedly be their worst game of the year. The offense will get figured out just as it did a season ago. The sky is not falling. This will get resolved just like it did last year but it is frustrating nonetheless.
