Matt Ammendola is released by Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs released kicker Matt Ammendola from the practice squad on Monday after a brutal game in Week 3.
The Kansas City Chiefs were sure to make quick work of fixing their woes at kicker, at least if it feels like Harrison Butker is going to remain out with injury. But either way, it meant kicker Matt Ammendola was likely going to be released after a miserable performance for the team against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 3.
On Monday, the Chiefs made it official with his release from the team’s practice squad, per NFL reporter Field Yates.
On Sunday, the Chiefs lost to the Colts by a final score of 20-17 on a day in which the entire team seemed to shoot itself in the foot again and again. Ammendola certainly wasn’t the only one to blame—in fact, multiple players on both sides of the ball accepted blame and offered apologies for fans in post-game comments—but he didn’t help matters at all on a day when special teams were brutal in every respect.
Dave Toub has to be fuming at the embarrassing performance put on by his units following the loss on Sunday afternoon. Ammendola, for his part, missed an early extra point and another short field goal and apparently worked himself into such a toxic relationship with the coaching staff that they elected to fake a long fourth down attempt with a pass from punter Tommy Townsend instead of kicking a moderate field goal.
To Ammendola’s credit, the previous week was perfect against the L.A. Chargers, in which Ammendola scored all six possible points. And it’s odd that the Chiefs would refuse to use the only kicker on the team at present. Otherwise why sign him in the first place?.
Now the Chiefs will have to add another kicker after a likely round of tryouts or they know that Butker is ready to return to the field after injuring his ankle in Week 1.
