Chiefs vs. Colts: Six frustrating takeaways from Week 3
By Matt Conner
Not so special teams
Dave Toub has been a marvel of a special teams coach since the Chiefs brought him on board with Andy Reid back in 2013. One single game doesn’t erase that legacy and the fact that his units are among the most well-coached in the game, players who are often proven ready even as rookies.
For the Chiefs on Sunday, however, the special teams units were proven not so special. From a returner who couldn’t locate the football in Skyy Moore to a kicker who couldn’t convert the basics, from other near-gaffes that would have made the game even worse to frustrating penalties that keep the game close, special teams was one big mistake all game long.
There’s going to be a lot of questions asked of Toub and Andy Reid and their collective choices, but coaching was only part of the problem. Skyy Moore simply cannot be placed back there to receive punts if he’s not ready. The Chiefs should not be rolling with Matt Ammendola if they don’t even trust him to do his job. Isiah Pacheco is making rookie mistakes on his decisions to come out with the football on kickoffs and then he also nearly fumbled the ball at a key point.
Special teams were absolutely the difference on Sunday and not in a good way for K.C.
