Tyreek Hill shows what KC Chiefs are missing on offense

It was bound to happen eventually. Last weekend, for the first time since the Kansas City Chiefs traded him to the Miami Dolphins, I missed Tyreek Hill.

Hill was at his absolute best against the Baltimore Ravens, with his elite talent and abilities on full display. He reeled in 11 catches for 190 yards and two touchdowns, playing a key role in Miami’s stunning come-from-behind win against the Ravens.

We always knew what Kansas City was giving up when Hill was traded away, but last Sunday was the first time that we got a taste of seeing him in full flight for a team other than the Chiefs. It was tough to stomach, in a way. Not because I don’t want to see Hill do well, but because it was finally sinking in that K.C. doesn’t have a player like that anymore.

Tyreek Hill is reminding everyone in Chiefs Kingdom what he brought to the Kansas City Chiefs offense.

I am of the opinion that trading Hill will still work out well for the Chiefs. I think their offense is more well-rounded and harder to defend. But still, watching the way Hill torched the Ravens, it was impossible not to miss him.

With Hill gone, Kansas City brought in JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling as his replacements – the thought being that while one of them alone won’t replace Hill, as a duo, they could hopefully match his production. So far, that has not happened.

Hill had more yards and touchdowns last Sunday alone—190 and two TDs—than JuJu and MVS have so far this season combined: 146 yards and zero TDs. The pair had just 23 yards combined against the L.A. Chargers.

Of course, it is only Week 2. This is a marathon, not a sprint. It will take time for Valdes-Scantling and Smith-Schuster to acclimate to the new offense and gel with Patrick Mahomes, and likewise it will take time for the coaching staff to fully utilize them in the game plan. But even once that happens—and I believe it will—it is still unlikely that we will see the same kind of explosiveness and raw talent that Hill possesses.

Both JuJu and MVS will have big games in the future; they’ll go for 100+ yards and have multiple TDs and hopefully win a game for the Chiefs. And even though I think KC’s offense will be better overall with them in it rather than Hill, it will still be agonizing, at times, to see Hill have wild games like he did last weekend.
