Andy Reid: Skyy Moore will ‘gradually’ get more snaps for Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs are off to a 2-0 start to the season, being just one of six unbeaten teams in the league so far while sitting alone atop the AFC West. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is off to another great start to the season, tying the league for most touchdown passes with seven, and currently has the NFL’s best passer rating at 127.9.
Tight end Travis Kelce is the obvious leading pass-catcher on the Chiefs with 13 receptions for 172 yards. But behind Kelce, the Chiefs don’t have a clear-cut wide receiver who has contributed in a big manner through two games so far this season.
Wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster is the leading wideout, pulling in 9 catches for 89 yards. Smith-Schuster got off to a solid start in Week 1 in the team’s 44-21 victory in Arizona when he caught six passes for 79 yards, all in the first half. But a drop and a pair of fumbles, one resulting in a turnover right before halftime, overshadowed his first-half performance. Smith-Schuster was not targeted for the rest of the game.
Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Skyy Moore has just 15 offensive snaps in two games and he saw just two snaps last Thursday night.
His first catch against the Chargers last Thursday night did not come until late in the first half. He finished that game with three catches for 10 yards while wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling caught two passes for 13 yards.
With the wide receivers off to a slow start, where does rookie Skyy Moore come into play? Moore has just one catch for 30 yards. The second-round pick out of Western Michigan saw just two offensive snaps last Thursday night in the team’s home opener.
Going into the 2022 NFL Draft, Moore’s vertical speed received a lot of high praise from scouts. After receiving several draft picks from the Miami Dolphins in the Tyreek Hill trade, it made sense for the Chiefs to find a receiver who possesses that kind of speed in Moore.
It’s still early. None of this is to suggest that Moore should fully replace Smith-Schuster or Valdes-Scantling right now. However, given Moore’s skillset, it would be nice to see him get additional snaps on offense.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said during Wednesday’s press conference that Moore will “gradually” get more snaps each week and that Moore will “keep getting involved in the game plan.”
The Chiefs face the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, who have scored the fewest points so far while the Chiefs are tied second for most points, just one point shy of tying the league-leading Buffalo Bills. Not that any team would ever be taken lightly, but if there was ever a time to let Moore get extra snaps, this would be a good week to start.
We know one of Mahomes’ strengths is distributing the ball around and getting several players involved on the field. With Moore expected to get more playing time on offense, a lot of people are expecting Mahomes and Moore to connect and do a lot of damage to opposing defenses. That can only help the Chiefs as they try to stay on top of the division and conference.
