RB Derrick Gore

If Saturday’s performances decided these roster decisions, running back Derrick Gore would be the top candidate.

Gore entered the preseason already on the roster bubble, sitting fifth on the Chiefs 90-man depth chart. He needed a strong preseason performance to make the team’s initial 53-man roster, which Gore failed to do in 2021. While he was productive in limited attempts, Gore rarely played above replacement level during the 2021 regular season. Then, he played below even that to start the 2022 preseason.

Gore struggled mightily against the Bears, with 2 rushing attempts for -2 yards. While his 3 targets in the passing game led all running backs, being a check-down option will not save Gore.  The veteran looked pedestrian in the first preseason game, and his injury further complicates matters.

Gore suffered a neck injury, which sidelined him for the remaining game. The Chiefs labeled Gore as “questionable to return”, but that remains the only official update. Neck injuries can be fickle things, as minor as a stinger or something much, much more serious. Depending on Gore’s situation, he could earn the “Waived/injured” tag before Tuesday’s deadline. That would allow the other 31 NFL teams to claim him, but an injured Gore would likely clear waivers. From that point, Gore could remain in Kansas City or reach an injury settlement with the team.

Gore is an alright back, but the Chiefs have other options above and below Gore. If the injury is serious, do not be surprised to see him on the transaction wire come Tuesday.
