With training camp in full swing, injuries will also become a bigger concern. Which positions are the Chiefs particularly vulnerable to in case of injuries?
With training camp in full swing and preseason games on the horizon, fans across the NFL are crossing their fingers that their favorite team gets to Week One of the regular season injury-free, and fans in Chiefs Kingdom are no exception.
The Chiefs have already had an injury scare this preseason after Skyy Moore suffered an apparent injury during practice on August 2. Fortunately, he assured fans that he is okay. But that incident raises an important question for Kansas City, where are the Chiefs vulnerable in case of the injury bug, even if it is just one?
Let’s go over some positions where the Chiefs could be in some trouble if a starter and/or contributor is injured.
Note: Quarterback has been excluded as that position is way too obvious for this article.
Honorable Mention: Offensive Tackle
Offensive tackle is a position for Kansas City that may have decent depth if you ask one person and zero depth if you ask another. What I mean by that is Orlando Brown Jr. is a very solid left tackle in the NFL but the guys around him are either unproven or not up to his level, which is expected.
The Chiefs currently have Orlando Brown Jr., Andrew Wylie, Lucas Niang, Geron Christian, Darian Kinnard, and Prince Tega Wanogho as potential tackles who could make the final roster later this month and early next month. The reason that OT is an honorable mention is that after OBJ, the Chiefs have a shortage of established players behind him that could take his spot. Geron Christian was decent for Houston last year but he’s more a swing tackle and not a starter, in my opinion. Niang is coming off a major injury and didn’t exactly play well enough to fend off Andrew Wylie as the starting right tackle. Kinnard and Prince Tega Wanogho are also completely unproven in the NFL.
I do feel the Chiefs will be fine if one of their tackles suffers an injury but I definitely question their overall depth at the position.
