It has been a long offseason, but the best time of year is nearly here. The gear is packed, hotels are bought, and the crazy entrances are planned. Training camp is nearly here! Kansas City Chiefs fans rejoice, the yearly sojourn to St. Joseph, Mo. is less than a week away.
It has been a franchise-defining offseason for the Kansas City Chiefs. General manager Brett Veach drafted ten new players in the 2022 NFL Draft, the franchise’s largest draft class in nearly 15 years. Matt Nagy has returned to Kansas City as the team’s quarterback coach and senior assistant. That and more have kept changes coming to Kansas City.
Training camp is supposed to be a team’s chance at ironing out the roster and scheme, but extraneous details can hinder that. Last year, defensive end Frank Clark’s legal issues garnered attention during training camp, putting his regular season status in question. Left tackle Orlando Brown Jr.’s contract negotiation, or lack thereof, is an off-field issue hanging over Kansas City’s 2022 training camp.
But, there is plenty of on-field drama to watch in training camp. 90 players will begin cam pas Chiefs, but only 53 will make the initial roster. Veterans will fight to maintain their spot, while hungry newcomers fight the status quo. The Chiefs’ depth chart will certainly be shuffled around in St. Joseph, between injuries, player progression, or unexplained coaching preference. Training camp is a very important and entertaining time of year for Chiefs fans, thousands of who will make the trip up north.
