The Kansas City Chiefs have created an open spot on the offseason 90-man roster with the release of wide receiver Chris Finke.
After making a slew of transactions over the last week, including rookie free agent signings, drafting 10 players, and trading for cornerback Lonnie Johnson in a deal with the Houston Texans, the Kansas City Chiefs were needing to create some space to accommodate the new arrivals. On Tuesday, they created one roster opening with the release of wide receiver Chris Finke.
The Chiefs released Finke for the second time, ending his second stint with the club. Given his familiarity with the front office and coaches in the last two seasons, it stands to reason that he will stay on the list of potential contacts if needed.
Finke first landed with the Chiefs in 2021 as a late spring addition hoping to make the team as a slight receiver and returner. Known as the Slippery Fox back in his days at Notre Dame, Finke caught 106 passes for 1,251 yards in his four seasons for the Fighting Irish. He was also the primary punt returner during three of those years.
Finke was released after just a couple of months with the Chiefs with an injury settlement in late July. Then he re-signed with the team this past winter on a reserve/futures deal that kept him around Arrowhead until following the draft.
The Chiefs added several new receivers this offseason but also lost just as many, which makes the competition going into training camp a fierce one. However, the additions of Skyy Moore and Justyn Ross in the last few days likely created a bit too much competition and something had to give. While Finke is out now, it’s quite possible the Chiefs come calling again in the near future.
