KC Chiefs find ideal fits in four-round mock draft
By Matt Conner
1st round – Boye Mafe, DE, Minnesota
Yes, we’re keenly aware that this is not the first mock draft to come up with Boye Mafe to the Chiefs at the bottom of the first round, but this is often the case when the fit and value are so obvious to everyone. It happened the year the Chiefs selected Tony Gonzalez for K.C., and this sort of connection seems to develop every draft for some team and prospect. Maybe it’s Kansas City’s turn.
What we do know is that Mafe fits a tremendous need for the Chiefs as a team coming into the draft with a restructured Frank Clark as the best defensive end on the roster by a country mile. Even as a rookie, Mafe would immediately be the second-best edge with a very real chance to become the team’s best pass rusher just because he’s young and healthy.
The reason Mafe is even available here at the bottom of the first is due to his age as an older prospect than others and the fact that he’s a bit of a late bloomer. The technique needs work but the tools are there. What Mafe needs more than anything else is consistent reps and proper coaching and the Chiefs can give both to such a naturally gifted player.
