Andy Reid is now the fifth-longest tenured head coach in NFL
By Matt Conner
The Kansas City Chiefs knew they were getting a good thing when they were able to convince Andy Reid to become their new head coach back in 2013 after a disastrous year under the leadership of Romeo Crennel on the sidelines and Scott Pioli in the front office. Reid’s record spoke for itself, but no one could have expected the way things have turned out so far in K.C.
A look around at the league’s head coaches shows that Reid is presently the head coach with the fifth-longest tenure with his current team in the National Football League. Having begun in 2013, it means that only four other head coaches have been with their respective franchises longer—and even some of them are from Reid’s own coaching tree.
The 2022 regular season will be Reid’s 10th with the team. Coming into his time with the Chiefs, Reid already had a 14-year run on the sidelines for the Philadelphia Eagles which included a strong record of 130-93-1—good for a 58.3 win percentage. With the Chiefs, however, Reid already has 103 wins against only 42 losses in nine full seasons, which comes out to a 71.0 win percentage. That’s an incredible leap from an already successful plane.
More Articles About Andy Reid:
Andy Reid is currently serving a longer tenure on the sidelines for the Kansas City Chiefs than almost every other NFL head coach.
It’s in Kansas City that Reid won his first Super Bowl with hopes of more in the years to come as he works with Patrick Mahomes into his prime seasons. With three consecutive AFC Championship game appearances and two Super Bowl appearances in the last four seasons, Reid’s run of success looks like a sure bet moving forward and that only seems like a stronger conclusion when you count six consecutive division titles in the AFC West.
The longest-tenured head coach in the NFL is Bill Belichick, who accepted the New England Patriots head coaching job back in 2000. From there, Mike Tomlin with the Pittsburgh Steelers (2007), John Harbaugh with the Baltimore Ravens (2008), and Pete Carroll with the Seattle Seahawks (2010) are the only coaches listed above him. Harbaugh is a former pupil of Reid in Philly as is Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott, who comes in No. 6 overall (2017).
If you want perspective on just how rare such longevity can be in the NFL—often known as standing for Not For Long—just know that 10 teams, which is nearly one third of the entire league, hired a new head coach in 2022.
