Grading the KC Chiefs’ first round picks under Andy Reid
By Jake Kokoris
With the Chiefs holding multiple first round picks, we thought we’d look back and grade the team’s early draft efforts since Andy Reid arrived.
With the NFL Draft right around the corner, Kansas City Chiefs fans are eager and perhaps anxious to see what players the team selects. Currently, the Chiefs have a full array of draft picks, including their first-round pick. So ahead of this year’s draft, I decided to grade all of the first-round selections of the Andy Reid era.
I considered a few factors when deciding grades. I considered the players’ career with the Chiefs, the drafted player’s positional value, and the players’ quality relative to their draft class. With that said, let’s get started.
2013 Pick 1 – Eric Fisher: B+
The Chiefs selected Fisher with the first overall pick in the notoriously thin 2013 draft class. Fisher was the first pick of the Andy Reid era. He provided above-average tackle play for eight seasons. While he never reached the heights of some of the elite tackles of the 2010s, Fisher was, for practically his whole Chiefs career, a durable, consistent contributor at a pivotal position.
Sure, DeAndre Hopkins or Lane Johnson have had more distinguished careers, but it’s hard to knock the Chiefs for taking Fisher. After all, the 2013 draft was pretty barren. The top 10 picks included the likes of Luke Joeckel, Dion Jordan, Barkevius Mingo and Jonathan Cooper. Relative to his draft class, Fisher was a strong selection.
