With the turn of the calendar toward the month of April, teams are beginning to shift their primary front office focus from free agency, which has now played out for a few weeks, to the upcoming 2022 NFL Draft.

While teams will still undoubtedly retool their rosters with further signings, potential trades, and the like, the draft is the best chance to lay a foundation for the future, and the Kansas City Chiefs are going to be a serious player in the draft knowing they have nine total picks in the draft’s seven rounds.

For one of the first times in recent years, the Chiefs still have control over their own first-round pick in the 2022 draft and it looks as if they might be retaining it in order to use it for the sake of their own future. Recent drafts have watched them trade it away for Frank Clark, Orlando Brown Jr., or even Patrick Mahomes (which required the 2017-18 first-rounders), and the only first-round selection ever made by current GM Brett Veach is running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

As the Chiefs look to the coming draft, it will be interesting to see where they might invest that first-round pick. A few positions could lay claim to that selection for good reason, since the team needs long-term, high-end imports at both pass rusher and wide receiver. Even right tackle wouldn’t surprise anyone. However, for our purposes, we think defensive back might be a place where the Chiefs will want to draft someone—or at least there are players worthy of consideration there.

Here’s a look at four defensive backs who could merit a first-round pick at the end of the month.
