Nightmare of losing Tyreek Hill reaches far beyond Kansas City
Chiefs Kingdom received a monumental shock this week when news first broke that the Kansas City Chiefs were trading Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins.
It was a move that sent shock waves through not just Kansas City, but the entire NFL. One of the league’s most dynamic players was on the move.
The Chiefs traded Hill to the Dolphins for a 2022 first-round pick (No. 29 overall), 2022 second-round pick (No. 50 overall), 2022 fourth-round pick, and fourth and sixth-round picks in the 2023 NFL Draft.
For me, a Chiefs fan living in Australia, the news of the trade was especially surprising.
The time difference between the US and Australia and the speed of the deal meant the entire trade process happened overnight – from the first rumors of a potential trade to Hill officially being sent to the Dolphins, the whole thing happened in just a few hours.
The first thing I heard about the deal was that it had already happened, and I could not believe it.
It felt like a nightmare. Instead, it was the new Chiefs’ reality.
The news came out of nowhere. Contract talks between Hill and the Chiefs had apparently been going well until suddenly, they stalled dramatically.
When I went to bed on Wednesday night, all seemed normal. The Chiefs were fine, they still had all their pieces on the league’s best offense, and things seemed to generally be on track.
When I woke up the next morning, however, things were dramatically different. I was astounded – literally overnight, one of the most stunning Chiefs transactions had taken place.
I was asleep when word of the trade first broke, so I had no forewarning at all for that a team-changing deal was about to occur.
After waking up, it didn’t take me long to figure out that something dramatic had happened.
I had more than 380 unread messages in the Arrowhead Addict writer’s group chat and even more in the Arrowhead Addict Discord group. Twitter was going nuts, and a bunch of fellow Chiefs fans had already sent me a message.
Still though, as I scrolled through the seemingly endless threads of discussion, I was stunned by what I was reading – Tyreek Hill was gone, literally overnight.
Hill’s departure marks the end of an era – without him, there is no question that the Chiefs will not be the same. Kansas City lost one of the most dynamic, game-changing players the league has ever seen, and for me, it happened overnight, with absolutely no warning.
That is just one of the quirks of being a Chiefs fan overseas – sometimes you wake up to awesome news, sometimes you wake up to something genuinely shocking. Usually, you wake up to no news at all.
But this week, the news that I woke up to was simply astonishing. Literally overnight, the Chiefs had changed dramatically. What a stunning thing to wake up to.
