The Kansas City Chiefs will reportedly host Marquez Valdes-Scantling for a visit on Wednesday in the wake of the Tyreek Hill trade.
The Kansas City Chiefs are certainly staying very busy these days, even if you just narrow down their activity to a single position like wide receiver. That’s because in the wake of signing JuJu Smith-Schuster and trading Tyreek Hill, the team is now hosting Marquez Valdes-Scantling for a visit on Wednesday.
NFL reporter Tom Pelissero notes that the hosting of Valdes-Scantling is in response to the possibility of trading Hill, which has already taken place.
The Chiefs are in the midst of a serious overhaul of the wide receiver position, a move that no one saw coming, in the wake of the team’s offensive success in recent years. Smith-Schuster was intended to be a strong physical receiver underneath to help complement the two pillars that were already in place for years in Hill and tight end Travis Kelce.
As for Valdes-Scantling, he is already used to catching passes from the best in the game with Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers and is a deep speed threat who can stretch the field. Last season, he had 26 catches for 430 yards and 3 touchdowns in a year limited by injury. In 2020, he led the NFL with a 20.9 yards/catch average which shows his ability to generate big gains on offense.
That said, the Packers didn’t exactly make a big play to sign him and he’s been available on the open market for a reason. That’s not to knock Valdes-Scantling, but rather to just say that anyone expecting him to step into Hill’s role and thrive in a similar capacity isn’t realistic.
