The Kansas City Chiefs were able to retain a very important piece along the offensive line on Wednesday when they announced their ability to re-sign Andrew Wylie to a one-year deal. The contract is worth up to $2.5 million per a report.

The Chiefs were facing a serious lack of depth up front, although nothing worrisome since the regular season is several months away, given that so many of the team’s backups had hit free agency. In fact, even center Austin Blythe had already signed with the Seattle Seahawks earlier in free agency.

Wylie was perhaps the most important face of all to potentially bring back given his incredible versatility up front for the Chiefs. Wylie had stepped into long-term starting roles as a substitute at left guard, right guard, and right tackle in recent years. His return provides considerable security on the right side as Nick Allegretti’s presence also helps along the interior heading into 2022.

The Kansas City Chiefs have re-signed an important depth piece along the offensive line by bringing back Andrew Wylie.

Wylie was a good bet to go elsewhere because of his experience and versatility, but the Chiefs get a valuable depth piece back and Wylie can stay in a long-term home and compete for a Super Bowl run for another year. For the Chiefs, the terms are very favorable knowing how much they’ve leaned on him in the past.

Heading into 2021, the Chiefs now have Wylie on the right side in case Lucas Niang‘s return from a torn patellar tendon is complicated in any way.

The Chiefs still have Kyle Long and Mike Remmers as former linemen who are available in free agency.
