The Kansas City Chiefs have decided to bring back Chad Henne on a one-year deal to back up Patrick Mahomes at the quarterback position and keep that part of the roster in a very familiar order for the 2022 season.
NFL reporter Mike Garafolo says the terms of the deal are at one-year for $2 million total and the deal was done on the verge of the start of a new league year.
Henne has been with the Chiefs for four seasons as Mahomes’ primary backup, which means this will be his fifth, a full half-decade. That’s quite a bit of time with the same starter and backup, and given the continuity as a coaching staff as well, the Chiefs’ chemistry at the position is not a concern.
The Kansas City Chiefs have decided to bring back Chad Henne on a one-year deal to keep the quarterback position looking familiar.
Henne has enjoyed some solid moments in relief of Mahomes from time to time over the years for the Chiefs, although he is rarely utilized overall. Last year, Henne appeared in four games, but threw only 16 passes and completed 11 of those for 82 yards.
Henne, who will turn 37 in July, gives the Chiefs a veteran backup to go with Mahomes, who is himself turning the corner as a very experienced player. Given Mahomes’ body of work, it was questioned by some fans whether or not the Chiefs might go with a developmental arm in the QB2 spot, but Henne’s re-signing answers that question for another season.
