3.94: Mario Goodrich, CB, Clemson

Mario Goodrich is one of the better cornerbacks in this draft, but it should be mentioned that he is in a different tier than the top five. That doesn’t dismiss the talent that he possesses. This past season for Clemson, Goodrich finished with 42 tackles, 9 passes defended, and two interceptions.

Goodrich was hidden in Andrew Booth’s spotlight, but he shouldn’t be dismissed or pushed aside because, in the right scheme, he would be a terrific pickup.

Goodrich is a very good zone cornerback with traits that could allow him to become a good man coverage cornerback. But, if you want to play to his strengths, he is best used in zone coverage.

Now, I’m sure that you’re wondering why I made this selection since Spagnuolo’s scheme is primarily man coverage. This brings me to why I made this pick: When you look at the Chiefs’ top competitors, you think Bills, Ravens, Bengals, and now Broncos and Chargers. All of those teams have quarterbacks that have no problem running the football with their quarterbacks.

When teams do that, it’s important to not get pushed too far down the field with your backs turned. Which leads to a lot of problems. However, if they can get a cornerback who plays his best football in the zone scheme, it means he is always in a position to be attacking.
