Anthony Hitchens, linebacker

Chiefs fans knew ahead of time that Hitchens was likely going to be let go this offseason simply due to the fact that he was an expensive part at a position where the Chiefs could get away with going cheap. The draft investments made in the second rounds of both the 2020 and 2021 NFL Drafts yielded talented young players like Willie Gay Jr. and Nick Bolton, which meant Hitchens made little sense financially given his price tag over $10 million.

The Chiefs already set him free earlier this month, making him a free agent right now—a veteran linebacker able to sign with any team who wants to sign him. Whether he takes a quick deal or waits to see how things shake out for contenders and their linebacking needs after the draft is up to him, but anyone who signs him is going to get a guy with a lot left in the tank.

Hitchens is a well-rounded linebacker who can support the run well and isn’t embarrassing in coverage. Even more, he’s a leader in the heart of a defense who knows how to communicate well with tremendous instincts. He also comes with championship experience.

That total package should make someone a happy customer knowing how much he adds on and off the field. Don’t be surprised if the New England Patriots don’t come calling here.
