The Kansas City Chiefs made a slight change to their coaching staff on Tuesday evening with the announcement that former defensive assistant Donald D’Alesio has taken on a greater role with his promotion to safeties coach.

D’Alesio first arrived in Kansas City last season for his first year on Andy Reid‘s staff and became an assistant for Steve Spagnuolo’s unit.

D’Alesio began his football career at Youngstown State where he was a safety himself and started 44 games over five total seasons and totaled 274 career tackles.

The promotion of Donald D’Alesio is the newest defensive coaching change for the Chiefs.

From there, he would go on to coach at his alma mater for the next five seasons, moving from a defensive quality control coach to a defensive line coach and ultimately taking over as defensive coordinator in that span for the Penguins. Two former players, both defensive linemen Derek Rivers and Avery Moss, were taken in the 2017 NFL Draft—the only players drafted out of Youngstown State since 1999.

D’Alesio also spent a single season as a defensive analyst for LSU before joining the Chiefs.

With the departure of Sam Madison to the Miami Dolphins, the Chiefs are clearly shifting things around among their coaches in the secondary as well. Dave Merritt remains the holdover on staff while working alongside the newly-promoted D’Alesio.

Elsewhere, the Chiefs have also shifted things within the front seven on the coaching end with the departure of Matt House, linebackers coach, to Lousiana State University, where he will serve as the defensive coordinator for Brian Kelly. From there, the Chiefs moved Brendan Daly, formerly the line coach, to linebackers, while hiring Joe Cullen to coach the defensive front after spending last year with the Jacksonville Jaguars as defensive coordinator.
