In a move that presents a bit of a homecoming for Sam Madison, the Miami Dolphins have hired the Kansas City Chiefs defensive backs coach in order to bring him back to the franchise for which he starred in the same capacity.

NFL reporter Adam Schefter reported on Wednesday evening that the Dolphins have brought Madison on board with the new coaching staff under Mike McDaniels.

The loss of Madison to the Dolphins creates a hole in the secondary, although the Chiefs have been privileged to have two coaches handling those duties between Madison and Dave Merritt. Merritt has been with the Chiefs for the last three years under Steve Spagnuolo and could take over all duties for coaching defensive backs if needed.

Sam Madison has left the Chiefs for a homecoming with the Dolphins.

For the Dolphins, Madison will be tasked with coaching up corners as well as serving as the passing game specialist, per Schefter. Given the strong development of younger players like L’Jarius Sneed and Charvarius Ward and Rashad Fenton in recent years for Kansas City, Madison’s stock as an impressive young coach was bound to earn him a promotion or new opportunity at some point.

The Chiefs will certainly miss having Madison on staff, but they’re also presently working around the loss of linebackers coach Matt House. The team moved Brendan Daly to linebackers and replaced him up front with Joe Cullen, who was the defensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars last year.

Madison has to be happy to return to the franchise that made him a second round pick in the 1997 NFL Draft. He played a total of 138 games in South Florida over the course of 9 seasons and went to four Pro Bowls in that span.
