Report: Eric Bieniemy has yet to decide whether to return to KC Chiefs
By Matt Conner
The Kansas City Chiefs are not yet sure if Eric Bieniemy is going to return to the coaching staff for the 2022 season and beyond or not. At this point, the team’s offensive coordinator remains reportedly undecided, per NFL reporter Adam Schefter, and is scheduled to have a meeting with head coach Andy Reid in order to determine his future.
Bieniemy had two job interviews for head coaching gigs in the NFL again this offseason—this time with the Denver Broncos and New Orleans Saints—and was passed over for both. This is the fourth consecutive offseason in which this has happened, with nearly half of all NFL teams deciding against bringing him in at this point—some even doing so twice (a la the New York Jets).
For the Chiefs, there’s not much more they can do to help Bieniemy’s case as a potential head coach. Players interviewed about him will give him glowing reports, and his head coach has given several direct quotes about how ready he is for the job. Bieniemy has references aplenty and has been a firm branch in Reid’s coaching tree for nine years now. The Chiefs sustained offensive success speaks for itself.
Eric Bieniemy is thinking about all of his options this offseason.
That said, Bieniemy continues to get passed over in interviews, and Schefter’s report states that Bieniemy is wanting to figure out what to do next between returning to K.C. for another year with his contract officially up or whether he should explore other options. Those options reportedly include returning to the college ranks or even taking a year off to get some perspective. It’s also possible Bieniemy could leap to another NFL team to show what he can do away from Patrick Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, and Travis Kelce.
Bieniemy is now 52-years-old. If he returns to the Chiefs, it would be his 10th season with the organization.
