Riley Reiff, offensive tackle, Cincinnati Bengals

It might sound odd for the Chiefs to target someone like Riley Reiff, but there are enough questions at right tackle and for the team’s overall depth here that a play for a vet like Reiff actually makes sense in the right scenario.

Reiff came into this season as a free agent looking for a starting spot and his name was even passed around by fans wondering what the Chiefs might do after having released both of their long-term starting tackles a year before and having whiffed on signing Trent Williams. Ultimately he signed with the Bengals and switched from being a longtime left tackle to manning the right side for the Bengals up front on a one-year deal.

For a team like Cincinnati, they would do well to upgrade their tackles with early draft picks as they aim to protect Joe Burrow to the best of their ability. For a team like the Chiefs, however, Reiff could become important insurance, depth, and competition outside.

The Chiefs have Lucas Niang likely penciled in at right tackle next year, but coming off of a tough patellar tendon injury means his road ahead is uncertain. Beyond Niang, the Chiefs are also watching Andrew Wylie and Mike Remmers and Kyle Long all hit free agency next month. Remmers had injury issues this season, and Long’s signing never amounted to anything. Wylie has earned starter’s money with his versatility and experience and he should land a solid deal from someone else in free agency.

Reiff has now proven he can handle right tackle, and the Chiefs really have nothing at swing tackle, unless Niang is going to fill that role instead. A signing of someone like Reiff could serve the starting or swing role depending on how Niang looks upon his return.
