The Kansas City Chiefs have a couple of holes to fill on their coaching staff already and that’s before they decide to make any internal changes after coming up just short of their goals to play in Super Bowl LVI. Now they’ve begun the process of shifting pieces around and making some additions with the news that they have hired some help for the defensive side in Joe Cullen.
With the announcement, the Chiefs also stated that Brendan Daly, the team’s defensive line coach for the last three seasons, will be moving to coach linebackers instead.
Cullen has been around the NFL as an esteemed defensive line coach for well over a decade before landing a role with the Jacksonville Jaguars last year as a defensive coordinator under Urban Meyer. Given how Meyer’s year turned out, members of his staff are finding new places to land and Andy Reid was interested in adding Cullen.
Cullen’s history includes three years coaching up the defensive fronts with the Detroit Lions (2006-08), another three in Jacksonville (2010-12), a year in Cleveland with the Browns (2013), two more with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2014-15), and then a long-term home with the Baltimore Ravens from 2016-2020).
Joe Cullen is the latest addition to Andy Reid’s coaching staff.
Cullen also comes with loads of experience at the college level, including a short stint at Idaho State and some time serving as the defensive coordinator at Indiana.
It will be interesting to see how this affects the Chiefs plans, given that Brendan Daly has been working up front with the line since Steve Spagnuolo’s arrival. The Chiefs also had a hole at linebackers coach with the departure of Matt House, so perhaps Daly shifts there,
The Chiefs also lost quarterbacks coach Mike Kafka to the New York Giants earlier this week, leaving them with another void to fill.
