KC Chiefs sign 13 players to reserve/futures contracts
By Matt Conner
Austin Edwards, defensive end
The Ferris State star was always going to be a developmental project after putting up 17.5 tackles for a loss in his final collegiate season. The Chiefs signed him a year ago at this time after the Atlanta Falcons let him walk. His longevity here should give him a real chance to compete in training camp for an edge role.
Daurice Fountain, wide receiver
Fountain originally landed with the Chiefs as a tryout player at a rookie minicamp last spring and ended up being active for a couple of games while pressing for some real offensive opportunity. Given how good he looked last preseason, it will be interesting to see how the competition looks when he’s had a full year with the team already.
Josh Gordon, wide receiver
One overlooked anecdote when the Chiefs first signed Josh Gordon in the fall was that both sides were looking at this as a long-term signing. Given the dismal results, at least statistically for Gordon, you’d think both sides would want to move on, but the plan apparently won out. Both sides still believe here and it will be interesting to see how they work out.
Darius Harris, linebacker
Harris looked like a solid bet to make the active roster last year as a fringe linebacker but Dorian O’Daniel won out instead. Now that DOD is headed for free agency, Harris should have a fairly clear path to a roster spot if he’s able to prove competitive once again as a versatile linebacker.
