The availability of Tyrann Mathieu

If the Chiefs are going to make their way to a third consecutive Super Bowl, they have to have their heart and soul on defense in the form of Tyrann Mathieu on the field. Last week, in a thrilling game against the Buffalo Bills, they proved their ability to move on without him, but it was a miracle of a win that’s already been given a long-term nickname, and Chiefs Kingdom would much rather see Mathieu on the field to keep such games from being so close in the first place.

In case you missed it, last week, the Chiefs lost Mathieu just a handful of plays into the game on a rough collision with a teammate and his own helmet. He was taken off the field into the blue trainer/medical tent on the sidelines and then departed for the locker room. Mathieu was declared out after that for the rest of the game as he entered into the team’s concussion protocol.

Coming into this weekend, head coach Andy Reid has said things look positive for Mathieu, but he’s questionable on the injury report and nothing is set just yet. Even after practicing with the Chiefs during the week, he still has to official clear the protocol. Will he be ready? This is the single biggest player-related question on the Chiefs side.
