Round 3: Pick 93-96: Sam Williams, EDGE, Ole Miss

As aforementioned, it seems fairly likely that the Chiefs will be looking for new options at EDGE this season. With Frank Clark’s massive salary hit and Melvin Ingram’s age, the Chiefs will need to invest in the position sooner rather than later. If the Chiefs are looking for someone to be available to fill these roles in the third round, they may take a second look at Sam Williams from Ole Miss. While the last EDGE that the Chiefs drafted from Ole Miss didn’t work out, there are a lot of reasons to love what Sam Williams brings to the table.

One of the most important things to Steve Spagnuolo is having guys that are not only of the right skill set but overall size to take on blockers and be stout in the run game. In this case, Williams fits the proper criteria. At 6’3 265, Williams is about an inch taller than Frank Clark and about eight pounds lighter. On the right meal plan and lifting routine, he could likely close the gap for weight relatively quickly.

Sam Williams is a bit clunky and does not seem to be technically refined on film. With that in mind, his natural ability to use counter moves and hand fighting may be enough to get him selected well before this point in the draft. Although he certainly needs some work with NFL coaches, it is very easy to see the potential. I believe that in many ways, Williams in the 3rd round would be a steal for a team like the Kansas City Chiefs.
